Life under imperialist power
Somalia was divided into several territories. The French controlled northern most region. The British controlled the rest of the north. The Italians governed southern Somalia. Ethiopia controlled and inland region called Ogaden. Kenya controlled their northern border where Somalis lived, which was called the Northern Frontier District (NFD). These countries often had contact with many other places around the world. This results in the political climate of the world having a large effect on Somalia.

In southern Somalia, under Italian rule, the capital, Mogadishu, was established, and doubled in population between the years of 1930 and 1940. Other towns also grew, and basic health and education services were established. There were no Somalis in the colonial government, except at the lowest levels. Trade and commerce was strictly controlled by the Italians. They stopped the production of cotton, salt, and leather, making there not be many opportunities for trading.
Large plantations were set up to have Somali people work on them. This changed the economy, and made food production turn into cash-crop production. The main reason the Italians made this so was to produce bananas for Italy.
